Top Five Things to do during Transfusion

A Business Developer, Registered Nurse, MBA candidate, and Board Trustee of the Thalassemia Foundation – Shirin is always on the go! We caught up with Shirin and asked about her top five things to do during transfusion.

1. Rest!

Use your day-long appointment as an opportunity to catch up on much-needed sleep. Don’t expect a deep sleep though as nurses and doctors will wake you up to check your vitals!

2. Catch up on your favourite TV shows

Did you know that wifi is free at UHN and many other hospitals? It is quick and easy to access! You can also explore new resources, including the RBCD Hub.

3. Build Relationships

Monthly transfusions can be an opportunity to build relationships with others! Consider grabbing a coffee or breakfast with other patients while you are waiting for blood. Remember, if you go off the unit, let a nurse know and give them your number so they can call you when your blood is ready!

4. Welcome New People!

There are lots of young and new people transitioning to adult care. If you see new faces, consider reaching out and welcoming them. Ask them if they have any questions about their transition and you may be able to direct them to a person who knows such as a nurse, social worker, transition navigator, or other members of the team. A small gesture can go a long way to help make new and transitioning patients feel comfortable!

5. Connect with your Friends!

I also like to use my transfusion day to respond to emails and catch up with friends on social media!

Time can really fly – especially if you are not staring at the clock! What are your top five things to do during transfusion?
