The University Health Network's Red Blood Cell Disorders Clinic is inviting patients, families, and caregivers impacted by Sickle Cell Disease, Thalassemia, and other Red Blood Disorders to join us for a FREE Five-Part Wholistic Health Series.

The workshops will take place online every other Thursday from 6:30 PM to 8:00 PM in May 2023 and June 2023. These interactive workshops will provide knowledge and skills to support mental health and wellbeing.

Wholistic Health Series Schedule

  • Gain an understanding of mental health, the difference between mental health and mental illness, and the mental health continuum. Learn how Sickle Cell Disease, Thalassemia, and other Red Blood Cell Disorders can impact mental health and wellbeing.

  • Gain an understanding of Intersectionality and how oppression, including Anti-Black Racism, Racism, and Ableism, impacts mental health and wellbeing.

  • While we might not always be in full control of our circumstances, there are opportunities take ownership of our mental health and wellness. This workshop provides resources and coping techniques to support mental health and keep in the ‘green.’

  • This session will provide an understanding of mindfulness meditation and its benefits, especially for people with Sickle Cell Disease, Thalassemia, and other Red Blood Cell Disorders. You will learn practical applications of mindfulness meditation for your everyday life.

  • This session builds on mindfulness skills to explore how we can practice self-compassion and kindness. There will be a focus on integrating these skills to cope with Sickle Cell Disease, Thalassemia, and other Red Blood Cell Disorders.

Meet the Facilitators!

The sessions will be facilitated by Certified Health Coach, Aisha Saintiche, and Mindfulness Advocate, Reena Ruparelia

Aisha Saintiche is a certified Health Coach and the founder and owner of MetoMoi Health. With over fifteen years of experience in Mental Health, Accessibility and Diversity and Inclusion, Aisha has used her experience as a strategic advisor and health coach to understand the complexity and intersectionality of the mental, physical, emotional, and spiritual barriers that keep people from achieving their optimized health and wellness.

Reena Ruparelia is a mindfulness advocate and psoriasis warrior, who has dedicated her life to helping others find peace and healing through the practice of mindfulness. After being diagnosed with psoriasis, a chronic autoimmune disease that affects the skin, Reena turned to mindfulness meditation as a way to manage the stress and anxiety associated with the condition.

About the Authors

Sinthu Srikanthan is social worker in the Red Blood Cell Disorders Clinic at UHN.

James Bradley is the Transition Navigator with the Hemoglobinopathy program working between the Hospital for Sick Children and Toronto General Hospital.

Colleen Johnson was a nurse practitioner with the Red Blood Cell Disorders (RBCD) clinic for 10 years. She continues to volunteer her time to the RBCD Hub.
